A Rudder Angle Indicator (RAI) is a device
that can be either electromechanical or electrical and displays the rudder angle
of the ship. Rudder Angle Indicators operate in real time, They display
the rudder's position in degrees relative a zero state which means the rudder is
in position to steeer the ship straight forward.
Often a Rudder Angle Indicator will be a component of a
Marine Autopilot system, but
it may exist as a component of a steering mechanism as well.
