EPIRB Emergency Beacons

EPIRBs (Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacons) are life-saving devices that transmit coded distress signals to a global satellite network (COSPAS-SARSAT), alerting search and rescue authorities with the vessel's identity and position. These beacons are mandatory under the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) for many commercial vessels and are engineered to work under the harshest sea conditions.

Commercial Marine-Only Solutions

At PSI, we provide EPIRBs exclusively for commercial marine operations. These are not off-the-shelf units. Commercial beacons must meet stringent regulatory requirements—such as SOLAS, FCC, and IMO approvals—and be suited to vessel type, operational area, and maritime authority standards.

Why EPIRBs Are Critical—Even Near Land

Cold water drastically shortens survival time in a man-overboard or abandonment scenario. Hypothermia can set in within minutes, and even a vessel in sight of land may not be able to transmit voice radio signals due to terrain, antenna loss, or flooding. An EPIRB is often the last and only functioning system after a catastrophic event. It continues to transmit regardless of crew status, power loss, or structural damage.

Modern EPIRBs transmit on 406 MHz to satellites and 121.5 MHz as a homing signal for rescuers. Units may also include GPS for precise positioning. Float-free models are required for most SOLAS vessels and automatically activate when submerged.

Sizing and Deployment

We match EPIRBs to vessel size, layout, and mounting constraints. For example, deep-sea trawlers and tugboats may require float-free housings on deck with clear overhead space, while harbor ferries may be outfitted with manually activated units due to operational patterns. Improper sizing or installation can compromise rescue response, leading to non-compliance or ineffective beacon operation.

We Handle Compliance and Setup

EPIRBs must be registered with the vessel's information and periodically tested and serviced to remain compliant. PSI provides guidance on installation points, hydrostatic release systems, programming, and battery life tracking. We stock equipment from certified manufacturers including ACR, JRC, and Simrad, and our experts ensure your setup is approved and field-ready.

Consultation Required

Because every EPIRB deployment depends on vessel profile and authority regulations, we do not sell online without prior assessment. Please contact PSI for expert guidance. We'll identify the correct beacon class and model, and support you through every step of deployment.
