Net Sounders and Net Sounding Marine Electronics

Net sounders are a specialized type of echo sounder used in commercial fishing operations. Unlike traditional echo sounders mounted on the vessel's hull, net sounders feature transducers mounted directly on the net’s headline. This innovative positioning allows real-time monitoring of fish activity and net behavior during trawling operations.

Modern net sounders have evolved beyond simple vertical sounders. Advanced models use multi-element sonar arrays that provide wide-angle views ahead of the net. This forward-looking capability enables crews to steer nets toward high-density fish areas while avoiding obstacles or empty zones—greatly improving catch efficiency and reducing gear damage.

History and Innovation in Net Sounders

Net sounders trace their origins to early echo sounder technology developed in the 20th century for basic depth detection. As fishing fleets expanded globally and targeted deeper, more elusive stocks, traditional hull-mounted sounders offered limited insight into net behavior. By the late 1980s, manufacturers began experimenting with mounting sounders directly onto the nets—allowing unprecedented real-time visibility during the trawl.

Since then, innovations such as multibeam sonar, CHIRP-based transducers, and wireless acoustic telemetry have transformed net sounders into high-resolution, intelligent tools. Many systems now offer 3D biomass visualization, automatic net angle correction, and even AI-driven haul optimization recommendations. These tools help ensure sustainable fishing while boosting commercial yield.

How Net Sounders Work

Traditional echo sounders send a sound pulse downward and receive a reflection from the sea bottom or schools of fish. In contrast, net sounders use similar acoustic principles but are designed to monitor water columns and fish activity in front of and around the net. They relay data via cable or wireless telemetry to onboard displays in real time.

Many commercial-grade systems can distinguish fish size, estimate biomass, and visualize net depth and geometry during deployment. These insights allow crews to adapt trawling tactics mid-haul—saving time, fuel, and improving sustainability.
