The Furuno BR500 BNWAS Bridge Navigation Watch Safety System monitors the presence of the watch officer through watch safety system functions. Watch officers are required to press the Timer Reset Panel button at specific intervals, and if they fail to do this an alarm will sound. If the officer doesn't respond to the alarms, backup officers in the cabin are informed of the officer's incapacity in case of emergency. BNWAS is mandatory on all ships of 150 GT and larger.

The Furuno BR500 BNWAS Bridge Navigation Watch Safety System offers an optional Motional Detector to physically watch for the officer's capability and an optional Flash Beacon so the watch officer can recognize when the alarm is sounding visually - in the event it is too loud to hear or the officer is hearing impaired.
